Hi, I have a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis with 162k. Whenever I hit passing gear I get a loud bang. Otherwise the car shifts quietly and smoothly. I bought this car about a year ago and have no idea if the tranny fluid has ever been changed. Any advice would be great. Thank you!

If the transmission fluid has never been changed, then don’t do it now. You would be asking for trouble. If the bang noise I accompanied by a feel like the trans skips, then it may be internal to the transmission. If you hear and feel the noise but the trans does not seem to skip or fall out of gear, you may have a broken engine mount or trans, mount.

Try putting the car in gear with your foot on the brake firmly. Press the gas pedal quickly and then let off quickly. See if you can duplicate the noise. Do this in forward and reverse. If you can duplicate the sound then you have a bad mount.

We really need to know the year and make of your Ford. If it is a newer vehicle, then you could have electronic steering. There could many things that will cause the steering wheel to do this on this type of vehicle.

If a normal steer vehicle and there is a ticking when turning, then there could be a broken turn signal switch, horn contractor, or other internal mechanism.
