Overdrive

An optional gear that allows the drive wheels to turn faster than the engine. It allows for better fuel efficiency during high speed highway driving.  Overdrive has been widely used on cars and trucks for many years. This can be the 4th or fifth or even the sixth gear on todays newer transmission.

You do not need to select this gear, it is automatic on an automatic transmission.

Inside the trans. hydraulic pressure circuits apply many different parts to make the gear selection for you. The only thing you need to do is when moving the gear selector, make sure to use the “D” with the circle or square around it. On a manual transmission you would need to actually shift to 4th or 5th gear.
