GMC Sierra A/C Clutch | Chevy Malibu Blows Warm Air

2000 GMC Sierra 1500 4.3 Vortec v-6. The clutch went out on my A/C unit. Do I have to replace the whole system or can I replace the clutch and bearing only? Will I have any freon leak when I remove the clutch and bearing? For now I have rerouted the serpentine belt to continue to use the truck.

Answer: Depending on which type of air conditioning compressor is on your truck, yes you can just replace the clutch assembly. One style does require special tools and a special puller to remove the clutch assembly from the compressor, you can check with your local dealership to determine which style you have. I would always recommend doing a recovery of the system before any work is done on it. You may be better off replacing the entire compressor, because if there is an internal problem, or the shaft is damaged, you will need one anyway. Hate to do the same job twice! Good luck. But no just replacing the clutch will cause the A/C system to loose any freon.

Chevy Malibu A/C Blows Warm Air

I have a problem with the a/c unit in my 1998 Chevy Malibu. I’m not getting any cool air when I turn it on. Why is this happening and how can i fix it?

Have you had the freon level in the system checked?

Not that i no of. I just bought the car like 2 months ago and it just started doing this problem.

The first thing you need to do is have the freon level checked. This would need to be done at a shop. They will install gauges to check the pressures. If the system is low, the mechanic will have to add freon and check for leaks. Dont just add freon on your own because you have no idea how much is in there no without the proper tools.

OK. Can i do that myself?

Only if you have a set of A/C gauges.

ok cool, but if that is not the problem then what else could it be?
.
If the problem is not due to a low freon charge, then the electrical system would need to be looked at next. Specifically is the compressor engaging. If not, the control circuits would need to be tested. These did have a problem where you press the A/C button on the controller in the dash and the light would go off and on. This may be a bad control head. If the compressor does come on then next step is to check the air temp blend doors in the dash to make sure they go to the full cold position. If not then the air is not being directed over the evaporator and the air is not being cooled.

OK thanks for the advice Mechanic JK. I’m going to recommend you to all my friends for help even though I don’t even no where you work. L.O.L!!!

I work at a local Chevy dealership. I have been a technician for over 20 years.
