I have a 93′ bonneville ssei, with about 400k on it. I started noticing my transmission wasn’t disengaging at first and I had to break slightly harder to stop even lowering my rpm’s as I braked. That doesn’t happen anymore but often enough It hesitates to shift into 1st gear, but it does and doesn’t slip (or at least not much) Sometimes I can be sitting in a spot for awhile waiting for it to engage into first even dragging my shifter manually into first doesn’t make it engage. But other then that every other gear shifts perfectly fine and there’s no slip in other gears. What could be wrong with my transmission causing it to hesitate shifting into first? I’m going to check underneath the transmission tomorrow to see if any linkages are loose.

Unfortunately, you probably have an internal failure inside the transmission. That would be the only thing causing a hesitation going into gear, or slippage. This type of problem will require the transmission to come out and be disassembled to find out the exact point of failure. With that many miles, either a complete rebuild would be in order, or a replacement transmission.

Could it be possible that I just need to replace my transmission filter and get a flush?, I did a little research today and I see problems similar to mine (not shifting into first) and most of which seem to be pressure problems caused be having an old/plugged up filter.

I usually NEVER recommend flushing a transmission that is worn out, since that is more often than not a sure fire way to get it to completely go out. Just changing the filter may help if it is EXTREMELY clogged, but if that were your problem, it would hesitate shifting into every gear, right? You have a failing internal component that will just get worse, so it’s just a matter of time before the trans needs to come out and get fixed.
