What happens on your style of vehicle is the Mode Control Cable gets a little bent and then it won’t change modes very well from defrost to vent to floor. It will usually stay more or less in the floor position. If enough damage was done, it can also ruin the heater control head as well. You’d have to take out the control head and inspect the cable on the back that controls the different modes. It goes up to the mode door up in the dash. The doors have been known to hang up, and if this is the case that is what would have bent the cable. You have to remove the upper dash pad and associated trim to get access to the door. It can be modified not to rub with a little bending.
