1998 Pontiac Bonneville Security Light Flashing

Security or theft light on dash. The broken wire causes car to not start. This is used on the system with the chip in the key.

1998 Pontiac Bonneville just started not starting(no starter action) one time and then starting later. My security light flashing for 2-3 seconds and then goes out–so i don’t think it is the cause.

ProTech:
You probably have an intermittent starter problem.

It flashes for 2-4 seconds and then goes out even though it will not turn over. All other lights are on and the BRAKE light then comes on.

Yes that would be the starter, not a security issue. I’d recommend getting the starter tested, or possibly looking into a problem with the ignition switch.

The ignition switch because it is a chip key(security) just that the switch is not making contact some of the time but is other times?

Passlock chip in key security ignition cylinder.

Either really could be the cause. The wires break on the cylinder housing and often times lose contact and then have it again.

Thanks i got so involved in the security end of it that i was only considering that and the key switch did register for other contacts. Ran into a good fix site for security problems to completely bypass the ignition cylinder(security)and the tdm/bcm/ipc. They even take returns if it does not fix problem. Thanks ProTech I think we must have worn you out.(My internet is crawling) If you get back to me -can a new wiring harness be connected or does key cylinder have to be replaced. New keys if that were to be the case i guess.

The cylinder would have to be replace to do it right. It comes with the wiring that goes down the column and plugs in at the base. The cylinders come pre-keyed, so you would have a new ignition key, but the same chip as you have now.
