My car started shaking this morning & accelerating slower than usual. By this afternoon I was broken down on the side of the road. The car will turn on & shift into gear no problem, but is not accelerating. When it does move at all, it’s rolling backwards. I am wondering & hoping that it is anything but the transmission, but I don’t know anything about cars. Just paid cash for it 5 months ago, & everything was in awesome condition.

I have a 1988 Dodge Ram 150 318 A998 automatic. My torque converter locks around 40-45 mph but then kicks in and out. I’ve read that the 1988 had a non-electric lockup. What could be causing this?

Check trans fluid level and condition first, could be low. If that’s ok and you have no trouble codes set, you will need to replace the torque converter.

The trans went out on my Dodge Caravan again. Have read a lot of other forums with people complaining about this problem. Anyone else have this problem? The transmission shifts fine from 1at to 2nd gear, but then it slips real b ad going into 3rd. Changed the filter and fluid, but did not help the shifting. What else can i do to not buy another trans. Is there a recall on the Dodge transmissions? If not, there should be. Could it be a shift solenoid or something electrical like that?

From what I have read, these transmission are junk. A lot of people are having the same problem with the Dodge Caravan trans. like you. Going to have to spend the money again or buy a new car.

Unfortunately, from what you describe, it sounds as if the transmission is slipping. If it does actually shift into gear but won’t move forward, something has broken or failed inside the transmission. It would be hard to say what exactly happened without seeing it, but most likely the trans will have to come out and be disassembled to see exactly what failed. An expensive repair, make sure it’s done right!

we just bought it i felt the clutch and road in it all good we drove it 2hr back home 5 miles from home shifted 1 2 and went to third and nothing. You can crank the car let out on the clutch and stick it in any gear. No sound or grinding anything. Please help point me in the right direction.

If the transmission lost 3rd gear, then the trans is going to have to come out, get disassembled, and repaired.

Whew! Not sure where to start! Issue #1: Chrysler T&G 2008 will occasionally not shift out of park. Need several attempts. Took to dealer. Switch replaced. Not much improvement. Seems to be almost non existent when warm & dry. Issue #2: Warning lights (oil, electronic ignition, traction) will stay on. When this happens, it will not start, as if its out of gas. I shut off, leave ignition in “on” position for 20 seconds, then I’ll retry & it starts. Once running, it’ll go forever.
      Thanks James
