Backfire

Gunshot-like sound from the engine air intake or tailpipe. A condition in which unburned fuel is ignited at the wrong time inside the engine.

Similar to an engine misfire. This can be caused by a problem in the ignition system, camshaft timing or plugged catalytic converter.
